This is a two-volume set of John Jordan mysteries, books 11 and 12. They do not necessarily need to be read in order, but it does help keep the characters straight.Blood Oath-For me this was an exciting, can't put it down until I'm finished to find out who did it and how kind of book. John Jordan is a prison chaplain who has made a new start in a new town, with two kids and his first love. If you are looking for a "Christian" read, this may not be what you are looking for, but if you like real people with real situations then this is a good one.
Blood Work- This story is about an cold case of the disappearance of a young girl. John Jordan's father was the lead in the first investigation, and since he was retiring, after losing the election, he wanted to solve the mystery that haunted him. I never took the time to think of all the people that would be affected by one murder in a small town. I admit I am struggling with the final outcome of all those involved, when one thinks of the lives that were ruined. Sounds like a good set up for a future book, when the people who were devastated by this death find out the how and why.

GREAT READ... YOU WON'T WANT TO PUT IT DOWN
I received a copy from the author in return for an honest review. This is the 6th John Jordan book I have read and it doesn't disappoint. It is well-balanced with characters that are believable and have depth. As Expected, the writing style is what makes the story both easy and a pleasure to read. John Jordan is in fine form, giving the reader a believable glimpse into the times we live in and the complexities of human nature. He is not afraid to tell it like it is yet retains his belief in the power of redemption. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in the series

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS
I received a copy from the Author in return for an honest review... Wow, this book is the best yet. I have read 6 of the John Jordan series and have enjoyed them immensely. In this 12th book of the series 'Blood Work' takes it to a new level. Having thought I had a good understanding of John Jordan, I am gratified to see the ongoing growth of his character as he juggles his personal family relationships with the investigation. I enjoyed the insights into Ted Bundy and the twists and surprises in the storyline. I am so glad there are writers like Michael Lister.

I’m a big fan of the series, and await eagerly each new installment. It’s not unlike waiting for Michael Connelly’s new Harry Bosch and/or Mickey Haller novels. Connelly is my benchmark for crime drama (no, not saying he’s the best crime writer, just saying his characters and style speak to me best), and Michael Lister measures up exceedingly well…and it doesn’t hurt the two of them are friends.
In "Blood Oath", John Jordan’s official return to police work, while maintaining his presence as prison chaplain, provides one with a sense of fulfillment in Jordan’s life. We’ve long known he missed the active, sanctioned detective work, and law enforcement certainly had missed his acumen. With his daughter, Johanna, and life-long love, Anna, in his life, Jordan is in a really good ‘good’ place.
As always, Michael has incorporated his religious insight, depth of character, and razor-sharp story-telling to another can’t-put-down book. While some background is lost if one has not read Merrick’s and Reggie’s novels, the story nonetheless stands alone well.
In "Blood Work", as a long-time fan of Michael Lister/John Jordan, and growing up in Ted Bundy’s early kill zone (as well as that of the Green River Killer), this novel held strong interest for me on a number levels.
John Jordan’s ongoing walk between heaven and hell, good and evil – the undercurrent of the earlier novels – is joined of late by a focus on his balancing legal and just. His chaplaincy makes him question his belief system, just as his law enforcement duties cause him to ponder the righteousness of the law. Not enough, in my opinion, can be said about Michael’s ability to reveal our own familiarity with the “flawed and vulnerable” aspects of John Jordan and the book’s characters, and developing the personalities.
For those loving the challenge of determining the killer – in this case, one from decades past – the tell is there, but can easily be overlooked in the action; action that fills these pages, and all the John Jordan books.
Highly recommended, as stand alone, or as the last book in the series (for a short time longer). Read them all, they’re worth it.
